By the time Thom hauled her to the bike, Poppy could barely walk for trembling, shock, and exhaustion. It felt as if the battle had stolen her red blood cells, the marrow in her bones, the fight in her muscles. Even worse, she feared at any moment she might be snatched into the sky. With every blink, every step, she feared the ground might suddenly be a hundred feet below her, and she would fall like a stone, her bones shattering like pottery.

Thom shed her sodden coat, and wrapped her in his dry one, but on the motorcycle, where had he found a motorcycle? she wondered. The wind cut like knives. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but the set of his back, the turn of his chin, seemed to have purpose, as though he had a plan, or knew where he was going. This is Thom, of course he has a plan.

Water dripped off his curls, and his shoulders tremored, tensed up, then shook again. She tightened her arms around his waist as though she could keep him warm. They passed a sign that read: Grand Grizzly Lodges, and his shoulders rose and fell and slumped as he shifted the gears and turned the bike.
